Straw Diameters

Straws are measured by the ID, inside diameter
Pipe is measured by the ID, inside diameter

Tube is measured by the OD, outside diameter

Why?

Pipe is used to transport something
The ID is to calculate speed, volume etc

Tube is used to construct something
The OD is to calculate stability etc

Straws

Straws are a pipe and measured by the ID, inside diameter

Example

 5 mm Pipe or Straw

WD, wall thickness is 1.65 mm
1.65 mm x 2 sides = 2.3 mm

ID, inside diameter is 5 mm

Add total WD 2.3 mm + ID 5.00 mm = OD 7.3 mm
(OD also called nominal size)

This is 5 mm pipe or straw because it's measured by the ID, inside diameter

Nominal Diameter
Nominal pipe diameter means OD, outside diameter
(OD also called nominal size)

Straw Size

Measure the ID, inside diameter
The example above is a 5mm straw
